Welcome to Day One!

Dustin Funk

Monday, December 1

Luke 2:8-12
After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Over the next 24 days, you’ll get short devotionals written by our Oasis staff team - simple reflections to help you slow down, focus your heart, and make space for Jesus in the middle of all the noise that this season can bring.
Way to go for signing up and making this a priority in your Christmas season! We’re so glad you’re here. Let’s jump into Day One together!

The word "Advent" may not be one we use often, but it simply means the coming or arrival of something or someone significant. With that in mind, Advent is a great word to describe all that we celebrate, remember, and ponder in the Christmas season because of a few important reasons.

First, it reminds us that the prophecies about the Messiah were fulfilled in the birth and life of Jesus.
Second, Advent gives us a chance to reflect on who Jesus is—both as the Saviour who came into the world and as the living Lord who is with us today.
Lastly, Advent points us toward the future, reminding us of His promised return.

The practice of Advent might not be something you’ve done before. Early churches often observed this season with fasting and reflection on the Incarnation, but for many of us, Advent memories might be more about fun calendars—like the chocolate or Lego Advent calendars we looked forward to! There’s usually not a lot of fasting involved, but plenty of feasting and celebrations. While we’re not asking you to fast, we do encourage you to take some time for intentional reflection.

As part of our Advent journey, we’ll also be diving deeper into the accounts of Jesus' life – primarily Matthew, Luke, and John, where the story of Jesus’ birth and life is carefully told. To help set the stage, we encourage you to watch The Bible Project’s video on the first two chapters of the Gospel of Luke.
Over the next 23 days, join us as we explore who Jesus is, how He came into the world, and what that means for us now. Set aside 10 to 15 minutes each day to read, reflect, and pray, all to hopefully center yourself on the true meaning of the season—the coming of Jesus.

How am I going to incorporate times of reflection on the incarnation of Jesus into my daily rhythm during this season?
