Isaiah 9:6

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulder. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

When the Israelites were told that a king would come to save them, they had all kinds of ideas of what that king would look like, what he would be like and how he would save them.

Isaiah 9:6 was written long before Jesus came to the earth. 700 years before Jesus came Isaiah prophesied about what kind of King Jesus would be.   You may have heard this scripture many times around Christmas but have you ever stopped to think about what each of those descriptions about Jesus means?

Wonderful Counselor - Wonderful: To wonder or marvel at something extraordinary or hard to understand. Counselor: To advise, consult, give counsel, devise or plan.  Jesus as our Wonderful Counselor has a supernatural capacity to offer the most marvelous counsel and advice that we’ll ever know!

Mighty God - Mighty: strong, brave.  God: The one true God.  Jesus who was born at Christmas in human form is the one true God! His might is unparalleled, unmatched and unequaled. There is no one as mighty as him. And He is for us!

Everlasting Father - Everlasting: Forever, continuing future, of continuous existence. Father: God as Father, ruler or chief, provider, guide.  Jesus is the God of continuous existence. He wasn’t created and doesn’t need the help of anyone or anything. He sets the bar for any earthly Father to strive for. He cares for us in a tender fatherly way.

Prince of Peace - Prince: Ruler, leader, official, captain. Peace: Shalom, completeness, soundness, safety; with God in covenant relationship.  Jesus being the Prince of Peace means that we have a leader who provides completely and can take what is broken and make it whole again. He came to bring that wholeness to everyone!

Maybe you have already heard all these definitions before. Maybe this is the first time you have truly broken down what it means that Jesus is our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. I know that in my own life I go through different seasons when I am more in need of Jesus as my Wonderful Counselor, then another season comes and I need the might of God to help me through it. No matter what season we are going through we have Jesus with us to help us in all of these ways.

Which of these attributes of Jesus do you need to hold on to in this season? Jesus, who was born at Christmas, came for us, so that we could experience him as our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace.
