Luke 1:38
“I am the Lord’s servant.” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.”
Luke 2:19
“But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.”
Do you ever wish you could look into the future? Do you ever wish you could know what the rest of your life will look like; all the good things and the difficult things, fun things, when you will retire, what retirement will look like and when you will die? Do you sometimes think that life would be easier if you had the power to look into your future? Would you say yes to God more if you knew what the outcome was going to look like?
If you’re like me you often look back on a difficult situation or a tough season and after a little while you can see why you went through it. You are able to see what God was doing in your life during that time for you to come out on the other side.
As we read the Christmas story, we are amazed at the faith that Mary has all the way throughout it. Mary is approached by an angel and told that she will become pregnant and will give birth to a son whom she is to name Jesus. The angel tells her that this child’s kingdom will never end, that he will be called the Son of God — the child that she will give birth to. Imagine being in her shoes. How would you respond to that?
Instead of Mary asking what the future looks like or what raising this child will be like or about what it means that his kingdom will never end she says, “May it be as you have said.” Mary accepted what the angel said without knowing what that “yes” would mean. She simply had faith that God would work everything out.
As things began to unfold, we read that Mary “treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” Once again Mary didn’t need to know the future to take the time to treasure up what she saw happening all around her. She took the time to soak up what was happening in the present instead of rushing ahead to worry about what the future would look like for Joseph, Jesus and herself.
Are you in a season where you’re trying to rush ahead to the next thing? Are you in a season where all you want to do is see the future; know the end result?
What would it look like for you to treasure up all the things that God is doing in your life right now?
What would it look like to say, “Yes” to God, even without knowing where that will take you?
